What is so happy about the holidays??? I have had my share of unhappy holidays. If the whole country wasn't so worked up about them it would just be another day.
I think it all began as a solstice celebration, the time when winter actually begins. A time of rest for nature and it used to be a time of rest for human beings too.
But now we celebrate all kinds of religious holidays this time of year. And for the most part it can be hectic and stressful.
I am heading to Tucson in a few days to visit my son, my daughter in law and my grand daughter. Tucson is dry and warm and I am used to cold and snow. But none of these thing have anything to do with having a happy holiday season.
What on earth makes the holidays happy???
The answer is our thoughts and what we make them mean.
Happiness doesn't come from the circumstances we find ourselves in. Happiness comes from the inside out.
So the real question is how do we create happiness in our minds first? The Buddha would tell us that our expectations create all of our unhappiness. And after all the years I have lived on this planet I tend to agree.
So now the question is how do we let go of our expectations? The answer I have found is to be in this moment now and see what there is to be happy about. Use your mind to search for something in this moment that you can be grateful for.
If you are not enjoying your holiday see what you can do to change it for the better. If you don't enjoy what others are doing for the holiday start your own tradition.
As my coach Terri Levine says over and over again
“Time is the one thing you can't get back.”
Use your time wisely. Enjoy the moment. Search for what is good in this world and in this moment.
Have a Very Happy Holiday Season.
